Shell Eco-Marathon Americas

Overview

The Shell Eco-marathon is a fuel-efficiency contest in which teams of high school and college students design and build vehicles with the goal of traveling the farthest distance on the least amount of fuel. It is a global program that supports education, encourages innovation, reinforces conservation and fosters the development of leading technology for greater energy efficiency.

Challenge

The event has been held in Europe for 27 years. Shell desired a similar event in the Americas and turned to Sport Dimensions to create and manage it.

Solution

Shell Eco-marathon Americas:

  • A unique, educational, proprietary event owned by Shell.  Sport Dimensions supplies the platform and helps communicate Shell’s message of sustainable mobility.
  • In 2010, after three successful years at the Auto Club Speedway in Fontana, CA, SD relocated the competition to Shell’s backyard - the streets of downtown Houston.
  • SD manages all event logistics, on-site environment (temporary structures, A/V, electrical, catering, etc.), event branding, contract negotiation, sponsorship solicitation and participant recruitment.
  • In 2007, the inaugural event attracted 17 competitors. In 2011, the event had grown to 68 vehicles. The competition has attracted teams from Brazil, Canada, India, Italy, Mexico and the U.S.
  • Shell’s PR and media efforts have resulted in coverage from CNN, CNBC, ABC, NBC, CBS, FOX, ESPN, Univision, Telemundo and several local affiliates covering their respective teams.
  • SD has also leveraged Shell's motorsports assets and media relationships to generate additional exposure for event.
