The Shell Eco-marathon is a fuel-efficiency contest in which teams of high school and college students design and build vehicles to travel the farthest distance on the least amount of fuel. It is a global program that supports education, encourages innovation, reinforces conservation and fosters the development of leading technology for greater energy efficiency.
Challenge
The event has been held in Europe for 25 years and in 2007, Shell wanted to create a similar event in the Americas and turned to Sport Dimensions to create and manage it.
Solution
Shell Eco-marathon Americas:
A unique, educational, proprietary event owned by Shell. Sport Dimensions supplies the platform and helps communicate Shell’s message of sustainable mobility.
In 2010, after three successful years at the Auto Club Speedway in Fontana, CA, SD took the competition to Shell’s backyard - the streets of downtown Houston.
In 2007, the inaugural event attracted 17 competitors and in 2010, grew to 42 teams with 48 vehicles. The event has attracted teams from Brazil, Canada, India, Italy, Mexico and the U.S.
Shell’s PR and media efforts have resulted in coverage from CNN, CNBC, ABC, NBC, CBS, FOX, ESPN, Univision, Telemundo and several local affiliates covering their respective teams.
Leveraged NASCAR race team assets and media relationships to generate exposure for event.
